Who, What, Where, When and Why!?

Who: Hi! My name is Gabriella Biondo and I am a Junior at Yale University. I major in History of Science and Medicine with a focus in pre-medical studies. I am also in the Select Program for Public Health through the Yale School of Public Health. I am in the department of Health Policy and Administration with a concentration in Global Health. I will be graduating with a BA in May of 2012 and with a MPH in May of 2013.

What: I am returning to Santiago, Dominican Republic to study there for the semester.  I will be taking courses at Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra and completing an independent research project on the public health insurance system in the Dominican Republic. I will be living with my lovely host family in Santiago.

Where: Santiago, Dominican Republic

When: January 2, 2011 – May 2, 2011

Why: My summer goal still stands: I want gain an understanding of the health care systems and how socioeconomic status effects health care beyond the obvious. My studies and reading in public health have led me to identify that inequalities mainly lie in access to health care. One way of providing access is insurance. I want to understand the insurance systems in place, both the private and public, in the Dominican Republic so that I can further understand how infrastructure of health care systems lead or don’t lead to access to health care.

I have also become very interested in the Caribbean and how political and economic forces of foreign powers have shaped the nations that exist today. The courses in Caribbean History and Medical Anthropology will count towards my major.

Also, who doesn’t want to be in the Caribbean for the winter months?! 😉

I really enjoyed reading your about and reading about your filed to a zona franca. I was born in the DR, went to college here in NYC and now work/live here. Were are you originally from?

I really hope the are a lot more yale students (from any university really) doing these kinds of things.

Best of luck.
Will keep an eye on your journey through your blog.
